Leona

Leona is the guardian of the shrine which houses the hides of Kimba's ancestors. Depending upon the version, she is either Kimba's cousin (manga), elder sister (66 series), or aunt (89 series).

Physical Appearance[]

in the Jungle Emperor (manga) Leona is a teenage black eyed pure white female akin to her relative, Kimba, while in Kimba the White Lion (1966), she is tan with purple-blue eyes. Her appearance in The New Adventures of Kimba the White Lion (1989) is a blend of the other version including some unique traits. The difference is that she’s an adult lion having a white coat blue eyes and tuft-less tail. her defining features are her bat like ears and whiskers.

She protects the hides of the great white lion Caesar at her home at all times.

Jungle Emperor (manga)[]

Leona is a white lion that is closer to Kimba (Leo) in color than the 1965 series. She is viewed as the Goddess of a pygmy village by its people. She guards the pelts of the white lion ancestors. When Kimba arrives in the village, she doesn't hesitate to give Kimba the throne. In the manga, she first appears with a crown on her head before she gives it to Kimba. Much like in the anime, Leona and Kitty (Lyra) have a little cat fight over Kimba on whether he stays in the village or goes back to the jungle.

In Kimba the White Lion (1966)[]

Leona makes her first appearance in Kimba the White Lion's Episode 19: The Mystery of the Deserted Village, and reprises her original role somewhat in 1989 "The New Adventures of Kimba". In the 1965 series, Leona is shown to be somewhat stubborn and proud, and very protective of the hides of her ancestors. She seems to support her brother following in their father's footsteps, and sometimes visits him in the jungle. Her two main appearances are in Episode 19: The Mystery of the Deserted Village, and Episode 51: The Day the Sun Went Out. In the latter episode, Leona is revealed to Kimba to be dead and killed by The Black Four. Coco asks Kimba (Leo) if he wants to take revenge on those who killed her, but Kimba refuses due to his kind-hearted nature. Eventually, it turns out that Leona was only stuck in the shrine and couldn’t escape. In the 1966 English Dub of the series, she is instead captured by the four panthers. Kimba doesn’t wish to save her because he is reminded of when she called him a “softie”.

In The New Adventures of Kimba the White Lion (1989)[]

Leona appears here in Episode 10: "Freedom", as a Goddess of a shrine in the village of the Palos Tribe. She is Kimba (Leo)'s aunt, and wants him to stay safe with her in the village. However she eventually decides that the choice is his, and allows him to escape her village.

She appears again in Episode 16: "White Beast" where she was captured by poachers. In the two-part episode "Sacrifice" she is killed by Ham Egg (Jake) when Leo tries to save her, but neither of these episodes were ever dubbed in English.
